What is the physiology of menstruation?

Menstruation is the shedding of the upper portion of the endometrium in response to withdrawal of progesterone following regression of the corpus luteum in the late secretory phase. The initial signals for the menstrual cycle come from the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary gland.

What is a normal cycle for period?

The length of the menstrual cycle varies from woman to woman, but the average is to have periods every 28 days. Regular cycles that are longer or shorter than this, from 21 to 40 days, are normal.

What is a menstruation?

Menstruation is a woman’s monthly bleeding, often called your “period.” When you menstruate, your body discards the monthly buildup of the lining of your uterus (womb). Menstrual blood and tissue flow from your uterus through the small opening in your cervix and pass out of your body through your vagina.

When is egg formed after periods?

It occurs at about day 14 of a 28-day menstrual cycle. Specifically, ovulation is the release of the egg (ovum) from a woman’s ovary. Each month, between days six and 14 of the menstrual cycle, follicle-stimulating hormone causes follicles in one of a woman’s ovaries to begin to mature.

Stress from work or relationships may cause the bleeding to become more severe or stop sooner than normal. For some women, increased exercise may lead to a shorter menstruation cycle. A common reason a woman’s cycle may shorten is because other women live with her.

Common symptoms of menstruation include bleeding, cramps, bloating and mood swings. Breast and muscle soreness or pain can be a sign of menstruation.

If an imbalance of reproductive hormones caused by any number of factors occurs in the body, it may result in a short menstrual cycle. Certain thyroid conditions, estrogen supplements, fibroids or polyps can all cause cycles that are shorter than normal.

What causes painful cramps during period?

Primary menstrual cramps or period pains are mainly caused due to the release of prostaglandins during contraction of uterus in menstrual periods. Prostaglandins is a type of hormone that is responsible for causing inflammation and pain in body.
