What do TV detector vans detect?

They work by detecting the electromagnetic signature that your television gives off. They are so accurate that they can tell you where in the house the TV is, and they can indeed see the channel you are watching.

Can TV Licensing check your computer?

Your licence covers you outside your home for a mobile device. Your licence doesn’t just cover you watching TV at home, but also watching or recording shows as they’re being broadcast on TV or using BBC iPlayer, on any of these devices: Computers, including laptops and tablets.

Do BBC detector vans exist?

Is it illegal to not have a TV Licence?

However, if you use it to watch or record programmes as they are being shown on TV or live on an online TV service, or to download or watch BBC programmes on demand, including catch up TV, on BBC iPlayer, then you need a TV Licence in order to do so.

Can TV Licensing enter my property?

TV Licensing can only enter your home without your permission if authorised to do so under a search warrant granted by a magistrate (or sheriff in Scotland). It is an offence to intentionally obstruct a person exercising the warrant (see section 366(8) of the Communications Act 2003).

Do you need a TV Licence for Freeview?

Yes. Everyone who watches broadcast TV in the UK must have an annual television licence, whatever TV service they use. You can check if you’re covered on the TV licensing website. Once you’ve paid your TV licence, though, with Freeview you don’t need to pay anything else on top.
