How do you get Stanage Edge?

Park at Hook’s Car car park (SK 24496 82904, S32 1BR), with Stanage Edge in front of you. Walk from the car park up the obvious paved trail over the moor and on to the Edge. Turn left when you reach the top, so that the edge is on your left and the moor is on your right, and follow the path along the top.

Lovely walk and such amazing views over the peak district. We parked in a free car park just a mile or so from the summit as had a lot of people but there was not an abundance of people.

What rock is Stanage Edge?

The silt, sand and gravel that was being washed in by the large rivers was compressed and lithified (formed rock). This coarse grained sandstone is called millstone grit and this is what makes up the prominent landscape feature at Stanage Edge.

Why is it called Stanage Edge?

The name ‘Stanage’ derives from Anglo-Saxon meaning, somewhat descriptively, ‘stone edge’. A medieval packhorse route stretches north to south along the edge and paved sections can still be found. Follow this northward, with a splendid, expansive view of the edge stretching up towards Crow Chin ahead of you.

Can you walk Mam Tor?

The Mam Tor walks are family friendly, especially Route 1, where we regularly see small children walking to the summit. It is an excellent walk for every ability walkers, and remember you can take breaks to reach the top if you need to. The views are worth it!

Why is Robin Hood’s Cave in Stanage Edge important?

The cave is best known to the climbers who brave the crags of the Edge, and the ledge beneath the cave mouth often accommodates them. It provides too a fine vantage over the Yorkshire lands to northwards.

Where to find Robin Hood’s Cave in Hope Valley?

In between the rocks view of Cement Works in the Hope Valley. The main reason why we decided to do this walk was to find the Robin’s Hood Cave. Robin’s Hood Cave is well known amongst the visitors yet it is quite hard to find in between the rocks. Luckily, we found it!
