Is a Logan lathe any good?

About Logan Logan lathes were made in the USA, and are of great quality- but they are much less known compared to other brands like South Bend which produced machinery of roughly equivalent quality. Logan is still in business, and you can still buy parts for Logan lathes (see this page).

This is evident by a grumbling sound from the gearbox. Worn bushings can be easily pressed out and replaced. New bushings are available from Logan or from a bearing dealer.

Which is better, SB or JHS shop Logan?

JHS/HS shop Logan we had used fair-decent roller bearings in that ‘CI’ fifty years and more ago. Not to mention that SB and many far, far better regarded lathes and mills made their bones on rather good iron bearings. Otherwise, the SB ‘toolroom’ right next to it started out as the better lathe.
