Why is SG iron used?

SG Iron has long been used to transport water and other liquids. Its remarkable strength to weight ratio, alongside its toughness makes SG Iron a suitable material to withstand the high operating pressures faced by pressure pipes and fittings.

What is ductile steel?

Ductile iron is an alloy of carbon and iron, as is steel. This allows energy consumption to be lower than that of steel, and allows the moldability of the material to be much higher. Among the most common castings are gray cast iron and ductile cast iron (as well as many other variations).

Is SG iron cast iron?

SG Iron is also known as Ductile Cast Iron, Nodular Cast Iron, Spheroidal Graphite Iron and Spherulitic Cast Iron. As the name Ductile Iron suggests this grade of Cast Iron has a degree of ductility. The main characteristic of this material is the structure of the graphite.

What is GREY iron and SG iron?

Gray iron’s tensile strength ranges from 20,000 psi – 60,000 psi, whereas ductile iron’s ranges from 65,000 psi – 80,000 psi and can be heat treated to 100,000 psi. Ductile iron has lower thermal conductivity, so it can insulate better than gray iron. Ductile iron is more tailored for engineering applications.

What is A395 material?

A395 material, which has the greatest ductility, has a minimum tensile strength of 60,000 psi. than grades 70-36 and 60-30 cast steel or ordinary gray iron (which has no true yield strength) and gives a high safety factor in load bearing or thermal stress situations.

Can you weld nodular iron?

Like malleable iron, nodular iron cannot be fusion welded and retain all of its original properties. This is especially true of nodular iron castings which have been heat-treated after casting.

Is ductile iron stainless?

This is a cast iron gate valve, available through Tork Systems, Inc. In the past, U.S. Coast guard and Navy regulations have changed to substitute these metals for one another when dealing with valves. Gray iron is upgraded to ductile iron, and ductile iron is upgraded to stainless steel.
