How can you tell the difference in magic card editions?
Alternate Fourth Edition cards have a darker blue colour at the top of the letter A from the word MAGIC while normal cards have a light blue colour. The printing pattern is very different. Regular cards have a hexagon pattern, while Alternate 4th Edition cards have an indiscernible pattern.

Are old magic cards still playable?
You can play them in Casual (not a “sanctioned” format, aka no events for it), Legacy, Vintage (I think?), and in EDH (also not a “sanctioned” format, but stores hold events for it, but no DCI rating). Not Standard or Modern, but those formats are pretty expensive.
How do you tell if a card is unlimited or revised?
While it is possible to distinguish Unlimited cards from Revised cards by just looking at the text (wording and type set) the cards from both sets are more easily distinguished by comparing the borders of the cards.
