How do you break-in a Regear?
Please follow these guidelines to insure proper break-in:
- After light use for the first 15-20 miles, stop and let the differential cool before proceeding any further.
- Avoid heavy acceleration and don’t do any towing during the first 500 miles.
- We highly recommend changing the oil after the first 500 miles.
What happens if you don’t break-in new gears?
New gear sets MUST be broken in correctly to prevent damage. Not following proper break-in procedures will lead to overloading and overheating the ring and pinion as well as breaking down and ruining the gear oil. Not following proper break-in procedures can be determined during inspection and will void the warranty.

How long does it take to break in new gears?
At Currie, we recommend the initial break-in to start by driving normally for 15-20 minutes (no bun outs, hard starts, or highway driving), then letting the vehicle rest for 30-minutes, never going over 50 miles without letting it cool. Towing and high speeds should also be avoided until after break-in (300-500 miles).
How do you break in new Jeep gears?
After driving the first 15-20 miles at around 60 mph, it is best to stop and let the differential cool completely – usually about 1hr. You will do this 5 times for the first 100 miles of the breakin procedure. Maintaining a speed below 65 mph and driving conservatively for the first 500 miles is also advised.
What causes the rear differential to break?
The most common cause of a bad differential is lack of oil, which could result in grinding at high speed, cause the carrier to break, or in most cases, block the rear wheels. It often happens when you have a worn-out differential seal or a cracked housing which could cause oil leaks.
Why should I Regear my Jeep?
Regearing refers to the process of changing your pinion gears and ring gears to a different ratio, which changes the balance of torque and speed. Regearing your Jeep is a crucial step in adjusting the size of your tires since improper gearing can result in more stress being transferred to the axle.
