How do you get to Chiloe Island?

To reach the island, you need to travel southwest from Puerto Montt towards Pargua, where you have to take the ferry across the Canal de Chacao. Ferries take buses and cars over on a regular basis, between 6:30 a.m. and 12 p.m. The fastest way to get to Puerto Montt is by airplane, from P. Montt you continue to Chiloé.

Are stilt houses safe?

Homes built on stilts or pilings can sustain damage even without exposure to storm surge and flooding. Admittedly, much of the damage to stilts or pilings we see is because of repeated water exposure, but there are other causes. The two primary types of stilts found in our area are pressure treated wood or concrete.

Do stilt houses sway?

The open space that stilts create allows water to move in and through the pilings without building up pressure against a large solid structure. Same goes for wind. Newer stilt homes are built on pilings that are reinforced with rebar and sunk deeply into bedrock. This solid foundation keeps the homes from swaying.
