What timing lights work with MSD ignition?
MSD ignition timing lights are the ideal choice for vehicles with MSD systems. Some of the best timing lights for MSD are MSD 8990 timing light, Innova timing light, MSD Ignition 8992.Jum. I 28, 1442 AH
Do you need a special timing light for MSD Ignition?
MSD-Compatible If you have a vehicle with a multiple spark distribution system (MSD), you will need a timing light that can time this type of system.Jum. II 9, 1442 AH
Can I use any timing light with MSD ignition?
It is recommended that you NOT use a digital or ‘dial-back’ timing light when using an MSD CD ignition, that would include any 6 series, 7 series, MSD 8 or 10 ignition. You definitely DO NOT want to use any of those lights when using/running a Magneto.Shaw. 16, 1427 AH
What is a dial back timing light?
The next level up from a basic timing light is what is called a dial-back light. These timing lights use electronics to delay the onset of the spark based on how much delay is dialed in on the light. Original dial-back lights used a simple dial with a timing scale.Dhuʻl-Q. 19, 1441 AH
How does inductive timing light work?
How does a timing light work? The inductive clamp is sensitive enough to “read” the pulse of the spark plug wire firing. Each time the distributor or coil pack fires through the wire to the spark plug, the timing gun senses the electrical charge and simultaneously fires a light pulse out the end of the gun.Jum. II 19, 1442 AH
How do you use digital timing light with advance?
With the engine running, merely press the advance button on the Innova light to advance the timing until the zero mark on the harmonic balancer lines up with the zero mark on the timing tab. The amount of timing displayed on the light is the initial timing.Dhuʻl-Q. 19, 1441 AH
Will a 12 volt timing light work on a 6 volt system?
I use a regular old 12 volt timing lite hooked to the 6 volt battery. Works well enough to see if you mark your timing mark with some white chalk.Dhuʻl-H. 19, 1433 AH
How do I know which ignition timing is best?
That is typically 15-35 degrees before TDC (top dead center) of the power stroke depending on the engine speed. Best power is achieved when ignition timing is set to fire the spark ahead of time to reach that peak pressure at about 2 degrees after TDC.
Are there any timing lights that work with MSD ignitions?
Have used all kinds of timing lights with MSD systems (6A, 6AL and 6ALN) t hru the years and never had one that didn’t work. Dial back, inductive in 3 different brands, non-adjustable in 2 brands and have borrowed several at the track. All worked fine. Trusty old Craftsboy worked fine last week on the El Camino, 6A MSD ignition.
Can a timing light be used on a multiple spark ignition?
Apparently, not all timing lights will work or are compatible with MSD multiple spark ignitions. Does anyone have experience with this situation or suggestion regarding what timing light can be used successfully with the MSD multiple spark ignition (like the MSD Street Fire or 6AL)?
Can a dial back MSD light be used?
Many lights have trouble reading the MSD’s capacitive discharge multiple sparks. Dial back timing lights are not recommended. Try another non-adjustable light and check the timing again. MSD offers a Timing Light, PN 8990. * Make sure you are not using Solid Core wires.
Is there an inductive pickup for MSD ignitions?
Inductive pickup should not be any issue . Have used all kinds of timing lights with MSD systems (6A, 6AL and 6ALN) t hru the years and never had one that didn’t work. Dial back, inductive in 3 different brands, non-adjustable in 2 brands and have borrowed several at the track.
