What is zinc selenide used for?

ZnSe is a preferred material for lenses, windows, output couplers, and beam expanders, due to its low absorptivity at infrared wavelengths and its visible transmission.

What is the physical state of zinc selenide?

solid
Zinc selenide (ZnSe) is a light-yellow, solid compound comprising zinc (Zn) and selenium (Se)….Zinc selenide.

Names
Appearance light yellow solid
Density 5.27 g/cm3
Melting point 1,525 °C (2,777 °F)
Solubility in water negligible

Is zinc selenide shiny or dull?

Zinc selenide
Appearance light yellow solid
Density 5.27 g/cm3, solid
Melting point 1525 °C
Boiling point °C

How is zinc selenide made?

Zinc Selenide is produced by synthesis from Zinc vapour and H2Se gas, forming as sheets on Graphite susceptors. Zinc Selenide oxidizes significantly at 300°C, exhibits plastic deformation at about 500°C and dissociates about 700°C. For safety, Zinc Selenide windows should not be used above 250°C in normal atmosphere.

Is zinc selenide toxic?

T Toxic by ingestion and inhalation with a danger of cumulative effects. Liberates highly toxic hydrogen selenide in contact with gastric juices. Dermatitis may result from prolonged contact. Particular care must be exercised when machining and creating dust or particles.

Is zinc selenide ionic?

There are two extreme ways of thinking of ZnSe. One is as a purely ionic system, with Zn2+ and Se2- ions.

Is zinc selenide ionic or covalent?

The compound is composed of a zinc atom and a selenium atom. This is an ionic compound because zinc is metal while selenium is non-metal.

When LED is manufactured using zinc selenide produces?

When made into light-emitting diodes (LEDs), wide-gap II-VI semiconductors such as zinc selenide (ZnSe) emit light in the blue-green part of the spectrum. If it weren’t for their short lifetimes, such devices could be competition for gallium nitride-based LEDs.

What kind of material is zinc selenide ZnSe?

Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) ZnSe is a preferred material for lenses, windows, output couplers and beam expanders for its low absorptivity at infrared wavelengths and its visible transmission.

What is the refractive index of zinc selenide?

The refractive index is about 2.67 at 550 nm (green), and about 2.40 at 10.6 µm (LWIR). Similar to zinc sulfide, ZnSe is produced as microcrystalline sheets by synthesis from hydrogen selenide gas and zinc vapour.

What happens if zinc selenide is poorly polished?

Zinc selenide can slowly react with atmospheric moisture if poorly polished, but this is not generally a serious problem. Except where optics are used in spectroscopy or at the Brewster angle, antireflection or beamsplitting optical coatings are generally employed.

How big are the optics for ZnSe selenide?

The material absorption is verified by CO 2 laser vacuum calorimetry. Our quality assurance department provides testing and specific optics certification on request. ZnSe optics are routinely polished from 5 to 300 mm in diameter. Sizes in 300 mm diameter and 25 mm thick are manufactured to customer requirements.
