What is gastric angiodysplasia?

Angiodysplasia is an abnormal, tortuous, dilated small blood vessel in the mucosal and submucosal layers of the GI tract. It is the most common vascular abnormality in the GI tract. Although usually readily seen by colonoscopy and angiography, they are often difficult to diagnose in pathologic specimens.

Can angiodysplasia be cured?

Surgical resection is the definitive treatment for angiodysplasia. Partial or complete gastrectomy for the management of gastric angiodysplasia has been reported to be followed by bleeding in as many as 50% of patients. Rebleeding was attributed to other angiodysplastic lesions.

How common is angiodysplasia?

Angiodysplasia is the most common vascular abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract, responsible for approximately 6% of lower GI bleeding cases and up to 8% of upper GI bleeds.

Can angiodysplasia cause bleeding?

Angiodysplasia is the most common vascular lesion of the gastrointestinal tract, and this condition may be asymptomatic, or it may cause gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding. The vessel walls are thin, with little or no smooth muscle, and the vessels are ectatic and thin (see image below).

Is angiodysplasia serious?

If left untreated, angiodysplasia can cause severe blood loss. And in cases of extreme anemia, you may need a blood transfusion.

How do you diagnose angiodysplasia?

Diagnosis of angiodysplasia is often accomplished with endoscopy, either colonoscopy or esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD). Although the lesions can be notoriously hard to find, the patient usually is diagnosed by endoscopy.

Gastric arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is an uncommon cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. However, it can be fatal and almost always requires surgical treatment. The endoscopic findings of gastric AVM are unclear and have only rarely been reported (1).
