What does static routing do?

Static routing is a routing type in which a network administrator configures the routes into the routing table to be used by the router to send packets to a destination network.

Is static routing still used?

Static routing is still very important and relevant to network administrators.

What is static routing in CCNA?

Static routes are manually added to a routing table through direct configuration. Using a static route, a router can learn about a route to a remote network that is not directly attached to one of its interfaces. The router with the next-hop IP address must be on a directly connected network.

What are the types of static routes?

The static route consists of a destination network address or host, a corresponding network mask, and the IP address of the next-hop IP address. The null route consists of the destination network address or host, a corresponding network mask, and either the reject or blackhole keyword.

What are the three primary uses of static routing?

Static routing has three primary uses:

  • ease of routing table maintenance in smaller networks with little growth or change.
  • Routing to and from stub networks. A network accessed by a single route, and the router has only one neighbor.
  • Single default route to represent a path to any network.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of static routing?

Table 3-2 Static Routing Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages
It is very predictable, as the route to the destination is always the same. If a link fails, a static route cannot reroute traffic. Therefore, manual intervention is required to re-route traffic.

What is the ad value of static route?

1
Default Distance Value Table

Route Source Default Distance Values
Static route 1
Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP) summary route 5
External Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) 20
Internal EIGRP 90

Is there a static routing lab with 5 routers?

Static Routing lab with 5 Routers: Cisco Packet tracer Lab. As you can clearly see in this cisco packet tracer lab i have taken total 5 Routers and 6 Networks: I am going to show you how to configure static routing with this Example Lab.Here I assume that you know how to configure IP Address on PC and Routers.

Why do we use static routes in CCNA?

Commonly static routes are used for floating routes (as discussed in lab 6-2) and a default route which is discussed in lab 6-3 however, many engineers rely on static routes in their infrastructure due to a lack of understanding of dynamic routing protocols such as RIP, EIGRP and OSPF.

Do you need to configure a static route on a router?

On each router configure a separate and specific static route for each network or subnet. You do not need to configure static routes for the router’s directly connected network (s) because like a host, by configuring the IP address and subnet mask on an interface tells the router that it belongs to that network/subnet.

What should be administrative distance for static routing?

In the routing table you should see a 0.0.0.0 entry. New York: create a backup static route pointing to the Loopback0 network on Washington, administrative distance should be 100.
