Is esophageal pH monitoring painful?

There are very few side effects of esophageal pH monitoring. There may be mild discomfort in the back of the throat while the catheter is in place. The vast majority of patients have no difficulty eating, sleeping, or going about their daily activities.

What does a pH probe test for?

Your health care provider will insert a small, thin tube through your mouth or nose. One end of the tube will extend down to your esophagus. The tube has a sensor that measures your acid level. The other end of the tube will be connected to a small monitor that you wear around your waist or over your shoulder.

What is a pH probe procedure?

A 24 hour pH probe is a procedure whereby a thin, flexible catheter is placed into the esophagus through the nose. The catheter is connected to a recorder worn on the belt. A 24 hour pH probe study is performed to look for abnormal amounts of acid within the esophagus.

How is 24 hour pH monitoring done?

The test involves a narrow, flexible tube called a catheter that is inserted into your nose and extends to your stomach opening. The catheter stays in place for 24 hours, delivering data to a small computer. Your doctor uses the data to make a diagnosis and plan your treatment.

Can you eat with a pH probe?

Eating is only allowed at meals and snack time. Your child may not eat anything in-between these times. We encourage you and your child to leave the room to take a walk or go to the playroom. The probe will stay in place for 24 hours to record information about the acid juices in the esophagus and stomach.

What happens after a pH test?

After your test, your throat may feel a little sore for a day or so. Sucking on lozenges or hard candy may be soothing. 3 Later on, at your next healthcare provider’s appointment, you should receive the results of your esophageal pH test.

How accurate is a pH probe?

Most manufacturers of pH electrodes build to a quality level that gives an accuracy of approximately 0.1 pH. If the pH sensor is properly maintained, calibrations done correctly, and stored according to manufacturer recommendations, then 0.1 is possible.

What is pH and manometry?

How long is manometry?
