How long does it take to go from GS-12 to GS-13?

I joined the federal work force as a GS-12 (full performance level)and now am a GS-13. The difference is that I had to apply and compete for the position with others. This all happened within two years. 52 weeks/one year is the minimum, unless and until they do away with time in grade requirements.

How many steps in GS?

Each of the GS classifications have 10 different steps, each offering a slightly higher salary than the previous step. Generally, federal agencies and departments offer starting salaries at Step One in your grade level, although you can negotiate “up” the Steps if you feel your past experience warrants the salary level.
