How do you pressurize a ball lock keg?

Rock the keg back and forth with the Co2 inlet on the bottom, for 7-8 minutes. (Rock for 20 seconds, rest for 5 seconds, rock for 20 seconds, etc.) Now stand the keg upright, lower the pressure to 10-12 psi, and shake for about 30 seconds more. Pull the pressure relief valve to release any excess pressure.

How do I know if my keg is ball lock or pin lock?

Ball lock kegs are a little leaner, but a little taller where pin locks are a little shorter, but a little wider. Ball lock keg connections use a ring of ball bearings to secure connections to keg posts while pin lock connections use a “tongue and groove” type set up to secure connections.

What PSI should I force carbonate beer?

To burst carbonate your homebrew, crank up your CO2 regulator to 30 psi for 24 hours. Then reduce down to normal serving pressure, which is around 12 psi to15 psi (depending on your beer line length and altitude). That should leave your beer 75% carbonated.

What PSI should I carbonate my beer at?

For most ales (including pale ales, IPAs, ambers, etc.) that come from the brewery with a carbonation volume of about 2.1 to 2.6, you want to set your regulator from about 7 to 13 psi. For lagers, a regulator set between 10 and 14 psi works best.

Are keg couplers interchangeable?

Unlike commercial kegs, which have one valve that requires one coupler, Corny kegs have separate posts for gas and liquid that each require their own coupler. These gas and liquid couplers are not interchangeable, and ball lock keg couplers are not interchangeable with pin lock keg couplers.

How do keg disconnects work?

The posts screw onto the keg and ball locks can be removed with a wrench, while pin locks require a specially adapted socket wrench. Inside the post there is a “poppet” that quick disconnect pushes down on when it is attached. The poppet often falls out, but can just be pushed back into the post when you reattach it.

How much clearance do you need for a ball lock keg?

You need 28” of clearance to fit the ball lock corny kegs and hoses. Just like everything else in homebrewing, you must clean and sanitize your keg and the hoses that the beer comes in contact with. Clean with a percarbonate cleaner, PBW, Straight A, or One Step.

What’s the name of the 5 gallon keg system?

The solution is using a 5 gallon “corny” keg system. Corny is the nickname for the company “Cornelius” that sold the 5 gallon stainless steel kegs to the soda industry for years. Pepsi-Cola uses ball lock kegs, and they are the most common and most popular for homebrewers.

What’s the best way to bottle beer from a keg?

If you want to bottle the beer from the keg efficiently, cool your bottles to as close to 30º as possible. Sanitize them, and then put a plastic bag over the top with a rubber band prior to putting them in the fridge. To fill the bottles, turn the pressure on the regulator to about 3 to 4 psi.

How many CO2 cylinders are in A Corny keg?

The ball lock corny kegs have an easy to open lid with a pressure relief valve, which then gives you easy access to the inside of the keg for cleaning. With one Co2 Cylinder and regulator, you can then hook up to 6 kegs with the appropriate splitters.
