How do you perform cytology sputum?

During your test, you will be asked to forcefully cough into a container. (A sputum cytology may also be done during a bronchoscopy, and will vary somewhat). When you are doing the procedure, the nurse will help you take deep breaths and expectorate from deep in your chest.

  1. Brush your teeth and rinse your mouth.
  2. Take a couple of long, deep breaths.
  3. Spit out the sputum into your sample cup.
