Can you convert a AC CDI to a DC CDI?

This circuit turns an AC-CDI into a DC-CDI. This circuit was designed to bypass the faulty stator by making High Voltage (around 100 to 200V) directly from the +12v battery. When the internal SCR of the AC-CDI has been latched in ON state for a spark, only the voltage crossing a falling zero will turn it OFF again.

How do you tell if your CDI is AC or DC?

Your CDI has two plugs, a 4-pin and a 2-pin. The 4-pin side may have 3 or 4 wires connected to it (both AC and DC versions). If the 2-pin connector has only 1 wire going to it, it’s a DC CDI. If there are 2 wires attached to the 2-pin connector, then it’s an AC CDI.

Which is better AC CDI or DC CDI?

The DC-CDI works well in areas where there is extreme cold temperatures and is very precise during ignition. The AC-CDI on the other hand, is simpler and rarely runs into problems. It is smaller and convenient too.

How does a DC CDI box work?

Working Principle of a CDI System. A capacitor discharge ignition works by passing an electrical current over a capacitor. This type of ignition builds up a charge quickly. A CDI ignition starts by generating a charge and storing it up before sending it out to the spark plug in order to ignite the engine.

Can I use a different CDI box?

Because ignition characteristics (particularly timing) vary widely across vehicle models, there’s no one CDI box that can cover them all. The CDI must be matched to the engine that’s being worked on. The CDI boxes in these systems are not interchangeable.

Are CDI interchangeable?

Can a CDI box be bypassed?

You can temporarily bypass a CDI box for troubleshooting purposes. The box amplifies the small signal generated from the spinning magnet located in front of the pickup coil in the stator, just before top dead center (TDC), when your fuel-air mixture is ignited. The box can’t generate continuous sparks.

Are CDI universal?

How does a DC powered scooter get its power?

The general rule is most DC powered CDI’s are 4-wire with the CDI getting its power voltage from the battery via the ignition switch. Thus unlike the AC powered CDI if one has no voltage or a dead battery you cannot start and run the scooter because the CDI does not receive its voltage from the stator.

How many wires does a DC CDI scooter use?

DC-CDI- on most scooters is a 4 wire set-up but has been known to have a 5 wire set-up also, the sure way to know is to check its power source. So now we move on to the rectifier and you might ask:

What kind of CDI does a 250cc scooter have?

CDI with the 5-wire pin out system which is common on a lot of 250cc and some 150cc scooter. DC powered 5-wire system on Roketa 250B scooter. Here is a schematic diagram of a DC powered CDI.

What’s the difference between AC CDI and DC CDI?

difference AC-CDI needs external High Voltage COIL no battery configuration whereas DC-CDI needs a battery without HV COILLooking at the picture on the left, it is a complete schematic diagram of a dc-cdi. Its a 4-pin system, comprising pick-up input, battery +12 volts in, Gnd, and Ignition coil out pins.
