What does IOP mean in eye exam?

As new aqueous flows into your eye, the same amount should drain out through a tiny drainage area. This process keeps pressure in your eye (called intraocular pressure or IOP) stable.

What is the normal IOP of eye?

Normal eye pressure ranges from 12-22 mm Hg, and eye pressure of greater than 22 mm Hg is considered higher than normal. When the IOP is higher than normal but the person does not show signs of glaucoma, this is referred to as ocular hypertension.

What is an IOP procedure?

Tonometry is a diagnostic test that measures the pressure inside your eye, which is called intraocular pressure (IOP). This measurement can help your doctor determine whether or not you may be at risk of glaucoma. Glaucoma is a serious eye disease that can eventually lead to vision loss if untreated.

Why is IOP important?

Eye pressure, also called intraocular pressure (IOP) refers to the fluid pressure inside the eye. Maintaining a healthy IOP will help to preserve your vision and prevent vision loss from eye conditions such as glaucoma, a sight-threatening ocular disease.

What does low IOP mean?

Low eye pressure may therefore generally be defined as less than 8 mm Hg. In general, the eye can see fine still at these low pressures, though the risk of blurred vision increases significantly with eye pressures under 6 mm Hg.

How is IOP maintained?

IOP is maintained primarily by changes in the aqueous humor outflow resistance, which is thought to reside predominantly within the cribriform or juxtacanalicular (JCT) region of the trabecular meshwork (TM) and the inner wall of Schlemm’s canal (SC).

Can you feel high IOP?

Can you feel ocular hypertension? A person with ocular hypertension can usually feel the pressure behind their eyes, however it is always advised that you have regular sight tests to ensure IOP is detected.

What are the effects of IOP?

Within the ocular system, IOP can depend on the balance of aqueous humor production, outflow facility (how easily aqueous humor leaves the eye), episcleral venous pressure (the pressure in the veins on the surface of the eye) and uveoscleral outflow (a secondary pathway for aqueous humor to leave the eye).

Is 8 a good eye pressure?

Normal IOP is usually between 12 and 22 mm Hg. Similar to using inches as a way to report length, mm Hg refers to millimeters of mercury and is a way to report pressure. An eye is considered hypotonous when the IOP drops below 10 mm Hg. However, hypotony may not be a problem unless the IOP drops below 5 mm Hg.

When should I get an eye exam for glaucoma?

Early detection, through regular and complete eye exams, is the key to protecting your vision from damage caused by glaucoma. It is important to have your eyes examined regularly. You should get a baseline eye screening at age 40. Early signs of eye disease and changes in vision may start to occur at this age.

What does complete eye exam include?

A comprehensive eye exam includes a number of tests and procedures to examine and evaluate the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to examine the health of the tissues inside of your eyes.

Do I need glasses eye test?
